The biggest lever: breathe slow and deep
The single largest gain is your breathing pattern. Long, slow, deep breaths -- full inhales and full, unhurried exhales -- move air more efficiently than fast, shallow panting, because shallow breaths mostly refill dead space without exchanging much oxygen. Relax your pace, extend the exhale, and let a slight, natural pause happen at the top of the breath without ever holding it. This is the opposite of skip-breathing (deliberately pausing between breaths to save gas), which is dangerous: it lets carbon dioxide build up, causes headaches, and defeats the purpose.
