How often should I service my regulator?
Follow your manufacturer’s program — most specify annual service or a two-year/100-dive cycle with an inspection between. The interval assumes rinsing and dry storage; a reg that sat salty needs the bench sooner. Our pre-dive tool tracks months-since-service against manufacturer-default intervals and flags amber before you are overdue. The invoice line that matters: seats, o-rings, filter, and an IP check within spec.
Do I need a dive computer as a beginner?
Once you dive more than a trip a year, yes — it is the first "big" purchase we recommend. A rented computer means a different interface every dive and a nitrogen history that resets with each rental counter. An entry unit like a one-button Cressi or Mares runs a few hundred dollars, logs every dive, and pays for itself in roughly 15–25 rental days.
What wetsuit thickness do I need for 70°F (21°C) water?
Most divers are comfortable in a 5 mm at 21 °C; warm-blooded divers get away with a 3 mm plus a hooded vest, and cold-sensitive divers on repetitive days will want the 5 mm with a hood. Charts are guidance, not physiology — if you chilled on dive two last time, size the suit to that memory. Fit matters more than millimetres: a flushing 7 mm is colder than a sealed 5 mm.
Should I buy a DIN or yoke regulator?
Dive mostly US boats and rentals: yoke keeps every fill simple. Buying once for worldwide use: DIN, plus a ~$30 yoke adapter in the save-a-dive kit — DIN captures the o-ring, handles higher pressures, and converts down easily. Is nitrox worth it?
For liveaboards and multi-dive days in the 15–25 m band, absolutely — longer no-stop times and friendlier surface intervals are the whole product. For occasional single dives or shallow shore diving, it buys little. The cert is a weekend and typically a couple hundred dollars; after that it is a few extra dollars per fill and the discipline of analyzing and labeling every tank.
How long should I wait to fly after diving?
Common agency and DAN-cited guidance runs at least 12–18 hours after a single no-stop dive and 18–24 hours or more after repetitive days — and your dive computer displays its own no-fly countdown, which is the number to obey. We are named for that window, not qualified to shorten it: follow your computer, your training agency, and DAN. Use the grounded time to rinse gear and read reviews.
Should I buy or rent scuba gear?
Split the kit in layers. Buy the fit layer immediately — mask, fins, exposure suit — because rental fit is a lottery you pay for in comfort and air consumption. Buy a computer once you dive more than a trip a year. Rent the service layer (reg, BCD) until you are diving monthly or tired of gambling on maintenance you cannot see. What scuba gear should I buy first?
In order: mask (fit is everything), fins with boots, exposure suit for your local water, then a dive computer. That sequence buys the most comfort and consistency per dollar before you commit to life-support gear. Regs and BCDs come when frequency justifies ownership. Split fins or paddle fins?
Splits reward a relaxed, fast flutter and are kind to knees; paddles give immediate thrust, precise frog and back kicks, and better control in current. If your diving is cruisy reef tours, splits are honest gear. If you fight current, dive wrecks, or care about trim skills, go paddle. Ignore anyone who says one of them is a scam — they are different tools.
What does the safety stop actually do?
It gives your fastest tissues a few extra minutes to release nitrogen at a shallow depth where the pressure gradient is gentle — cheap insurance layered on top of no-stop limits and slow ascents. That three-minutes-at-five-metres plateau is drawn into every dive profile on this site (and one of our tees). How and when to conduct it is your training agency’s call.
What is a good SAC rate?
Relaxed, experienced divers commonly log surface consumption around 12–18 L/min (roughly 0.4–0.6 cu ft/min); working hard or new divers run well above that. The trend matters more than the number — SAC falling across a season is the fitness-and-relaxation metric no one can fake. Our air-consumption guide covers how to measure it with any SPG.
Can I use a smartwatch as a dive computer?
Only if it is an actual dive computer that also happens to be a smartwatch — Garmin Descent line, Suunto Ocean, Apple Watch Ultra with the Oceanic+ app for its rated range. A standard fitness watch with a "depth" sensor is not running a decompression model and has no business being your primary instrument. Purpose-built units also survive being purpose-built: buttons that work with gloves, screens readable at depth.
Jacket or wing for a new diver?
A jacket gives you the surface comfort and integrated-everything familiarity your training used, and there is no shame in that. But if you already know trim is your goal — or you travel and count kilos — starting on a back-inflate or backplate-and-wing skips a purchase cycle. How much weight do I need to dive?
There is no chart that knows you — ballast depends on your body, suit thickness, cylinder, and salt versus fresh water. The method is what transfers: a surface buoyancy check (float at eye level, empty BCD, normal breath) done at the start of every gear change, then logged. Rules of thumb like 10% of body weight in a 7 mm are starting guesses only. Your instructor’s weighting procedure governs.
Do I really need a backup dive light?
For night dives, yes — non-negotiable, and many operators require it. For dark-water or overhead-adjacent diving, also yes. A compact 800–1000 lumen backup costs less than dinner on a dive trip and lives clipped off doing nothing until it is the most important thing you own. For sunny reef diving a primary alone is fine.
What is a low-volume mask and do I want one?
A mask with minimal air space between glass and face — easier to clear, less buoyant pull, wider effective view because the lenses sit closer. Freedivers require them; scuba divers mostly just benefit. The tradeoff can be a closer-feeling frame on some faces. Fit still rules: the low-volume mask that seals on YOUR face is the right one.
How do I stop my mask from fogging?
New masks carry a manufacturing film — scrub the inner glass (toothpaste or a burn-in per the maker’s instructions) or it will fog forever. After that, a drop of defog or baby shampoo, rinsed once, before every dive. Persistent fog usually means the film survived or the skirt is leaking a trickle. Steel or aluminum tank — which should I buy?
Buying is a local decision: cylinders ship badly, need current hydro and visual stickers, and your fill station’s preferences matter. Steel carries more gas smaller and stays negative (less lead on your belt); aluminum is cheaper and what every warm-water boat hands you anyway. If you only travel, do not buy a tank at all — learn the AL80’s end-of-dive float instead.
When does a 7mm beat a 5mm wetsuit?
Below about 17 °C, on repetitive days where a 5 mm stops recovering between dives, and any time your logbook says "cold by minute 30." The 7 mm costs shoulder mobility and noticeably more lead, which is why nobody wears one at 24 °C for style. Between bands, a hooded vest over the 5 mm is the versatile bridge. Bands are guidance; your chill is the spec.
How long do dive computer batteries last?
Three patterns: user-replaceable coin cells (1–2 years or ~100–300 dives — Zoop Novo, Leonardo class), rechargeables (30–60 dive-hours per charge — Peregrine, Teric), and solar-assisted (Descent G1 stretching weeks between top-ups). Rechargeables mean packing a charger on liveaboards; coin cells mean a $10 service ritual. Check the battery pattern before you buy — it shapes trip logistics more than screen specs do.
Console or wrist-mount computer?
Wrist, for most buyers: depth and NDL live in your natural sightline, streamlining improves, and you can add an air-integration transmitter later without replacing anything. Consoles keep everything in one familiar package and suit divers who want one thing to hold. Rental fleets are console-heavy for durability, not ergonomics.
What goes in a save-a-dive kit?
O-ring assortment with picks, spare mask strap and fin strap, mouthpiece and zip ties, silicone grease, multi-tool with hex keys sized to your gear, spare batteries for lights and transmitters, and a DIN/yoke adapter if you cross fitting borders. Can I fly with a scuba tank?
Technically yes with the valve removed so the cylinder is open and inspectable (TSA/airline rules apply) — practically, almost nobody should. Tanks are heavy, hydro is location-agnostic, and every destination rents them. Fly with your reg, computer, mask, and exposure gear; rent cylinders and lead where the boat is. How often should I replace my mask and fins?
On condition, not calendar. Masks retire when the silicone skirt hardens, yellows, or stops sealing — years of UV and heat exposure decide, so store them dark and cool. Fins last a decade-plus unless straps or buckles fail (replace those, not the fins). The realistic trigger is fit drift: faces and feet change, seals stop sealing, and no product fault is involved.
Is air integration worth it?
It is the upgrade divers stop noticing because it becomes how they dive: pressure, gas-time-remaining, and automatic SAC logging on the wrist. Whether it is worth several hundred dollars over a $90 SPG depends on how much you value the logging — the safety case is thinner than the convenience case, and you keep an analog backup either way. Skip it on a first computer; add it when you know you are staying in the hobby.
