The three architectures

Jacket BCDs: secure, familiar, forgiving

A jacket BCD is what most divers learn on. Because the air wraps around your torso, a fully inflated jacket floats you high and upright at the surface -- the most reassuring position for a new or nervous diver bobbing next to a boat. The tradeoffs show up in two places. Fully inflated at the surface, a jacket can squeeze your torso -- the "hug" some divers dislike. And underwater, because the buoyancy is distributed around your sides, a jacket tends to hold you slightly more upright than flat, which makes perfect horizontal trim a little harder to dial in. For warm-water, boat, and occasional divers, none of that outweighs the security and simplicity. A backplate-and-wing is the modular, build-it-yourself end of the spectrum. You choose a backplate (aluminum for travel and warm water, steel to put ballast on your spine and reduce lead on your belt), a one-piece or adjustable harness, and a wing sized to your diving. The payoff is the flattest, most stable horizontal trim available and a platform that scales -- the same harness grows from a single warm-water tank to doubles and technical configurations.

The costs are real: a BP/W has less of the surface "hug" that reassures new divers, it can take some tinkering to fit and weight correctly, and buying one means understanding lift, plate material, and wing shape rather than grabbing a box off a shelf. Divers who value trim, travel modularity, or a path toward technical diving tend to end up here and rarely go back.
