Why tank material changes your weighting

Aluminum: the AL80 standard

It is inexpensive, tough against corrosion, and available everywhere, which is exactly why shops stock walls of them. Its defining trait is buoyancy swing: an AL80 is roughly neutral to slightly negative when full and becomes noticeably positive -- it wants to float -- as you breathe it down. That end-of-dive lightness is the single most important thing to plan for, because you must still be able to hold your depth on a safety stop with an empty cylinder, which usually means carrying a bit more lead. Aluminum cylinders are also fatter and shorter than a comparable steel tank.

Steel: HP and LP cylinders

Steel cylinders come in high-pressure (HP) and low-pressure (LP) versions and behave very differently from aluminum. Steel is denser, so a steel tank is typically negative when full and stays negative -- or only drifts slightly toward neutral -- when empty. That smaller buoyancy swing is the steel selling point: your trim changes less from the start of the dive to the end, and because the tank itself carries more of the ballast, many divers carry less lead on their belt or in their pockets. Steel is the common choice for cold-water divers in thick exposure suits, who need a lot of ballast anyway, and for anyone chasing stable trim.

The buoyancy swing that matters

Here is the heart of it. Every tank gets more buoyant as you breathe the gas out, because gas has weight and you are removing it. The question is where the tank starts and ends. An aluminum tank starts near neutral and ends up wanting to float, so you weight for the empty, floaty end and feel slightly over-weighted at the start. A steel tank starts negative and stays negative, so the swing is smaller and your trim is more consistent across the dive. Neither is unsafe when you weight correctly -- the point is to weight for the end of the dive, empty tank, so you can hold a safety stop, and then confirm it with a proper buoyancy check.

Trim and how the tank rides

Because steel carries ballast up high on your back, it tends to help flat, horizontal trim, which is why backplate-and-wing and cold-water divers gravitate to it. Aluminum's end-of-dive float can tip your feet or hips up if your rig is not balanced, though correct weight placement and trim pockets solve that. Length matters too: a taller steel tank sits differently against your spine than a short, fat aluminum one, and the right fit depends on your torso. Durability, care, and hydro

Aluminum resists corrosion well but is softer, so it dents and gouges more easily and must be kept out of high heat. Both require periodic visual inspection and hydrostatic testing on a schedule set by regulation and the fill station, and both live and die by their valve o-rings. Do you need more weight with an aluminum or a steel tank?

Why does an aluminum tank float at the end of a dive?
